I don't know if this easter egg exists elsewhere in earlier versions of WoW, but I first noticed it during my most recent stay at an inn while questing in Howling Fjord in Northrend (specifially the inn in New Agamand).
This painting here is a parody of the well known classic painting by Grant Wood called "American Gothic."
